Centene Corporation, a leading multi-national healthcare enterprise, is establishing an East Coast headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 80-acre campus will accommodate 6,000 employees and will be comprised of one million square feet of office and meeting space, a corporate boardroom, childcare, dining, and a fitness center.
The construction crew endured a few challenges, such as a condensed concrete timeline of 32-weeks and a complex cantilever design. Lithko turned to PERI to deliver a custom-engineered formwork and shoring solution to a tight turnaround for Phase 1, consisting of the East tower and parking garage.
The East tower featured cantilevers extending up to 60 feet off the building without self-support until all floors were constructed. To provide backshoring support of 1.5 million pounds on a single tower and to support the cantilever, PERI provided Heavy Duty VST Shoring towers.
Due to project delays and changes to the building footprint on each level, the project required changes to formwork and slab system for each new floor. Each deck was designed as a complex grid with a high-level finish, leading to the decision to utilize the rentable, customized, and adjustable SKYTABLE forms for beams and slabs.
HD 200 props were used as backshoring while SKYTABLE slab tables were stripped and flowed to the next level in as quick as 10 minutes without moving the props. Due to its high load-bearing capacity or 10,000 pounds per leg, PD5 shoring towers were selected to support the tallest, 30-foot cantilevers.
Construction on the Centene campus will occur in multiple phases over several years. Despite the fast timeline and turnaround time, concrete construction was completed a week ahead of schedule thanks to the collaboration of Lithko and PERI USA and the efficiency of the systems used.
