Complimentary Facilities to Drive Healthcare Commitment
University of California, Irvine Medical Center (UCI) in Orange County, CA, is a major academic research hospital and has been ranked as one of America’s best hospital systems. When the health system embarked on an effort to add a new complex to the campus, it represented one of the largest investments in patient care services in California. Located adjacent to the University’s campus. The new complex includes the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, an Ambulatory Care Center, and an acute-care hospital with an emergency department. For more than 20 consecutive years, UCI Health.
When construction began on the new 350,000-square-foot facility in 2021, PERI was chosen as the preferred partner to deliver the necessary formwork solutions on a project with a complex design.
Flexible Formwork
The angular shape of the structure’s design posed a challenge in the construction process, requiring perimeter swivel tables to follow the outline of the building.
UNIPORTAL(8,650 square feet), PERI’s customizable slab table formwork, provided a safe, working edge that wrapped the perimeter of the building, enhancing fall protection. UNIPORTAL can accommodate all building shapes by using a trapezoid girder arrangement. Commonly used with interior panelized systems, UNIPORTAL helps to maximize exterior access for workers.
SKYDECK, PERI’s panelized slab formwork, proved to be the perfect solution as an interior system. This reduced material costs by eliminating the need for 30,000 square feet of plywood. With SKYDECK, material can be cycled level to level, increasing repetition and production. Construction crews used 35,000 square feet of SKYDECK surrounding level two, as well as 27,000 square feet spanning from level three to the roof.
VARIOWALL Formwork was used around all shear walls, including one architectural wall for levels 1 to 5 of the building. The arrangements of the systems components can be freely selected, meeting the specific geometries and requirements of buildings.
“The [general contractor’s) headquarters in California is located two miles from the facility, so lots of attention and eyes were on this project from [McCarthy’s] corporate office,” said Daniel Dubisky, sales engineer at PERI USA. “Members of the McCarthy team peer-reviewed this project and were really pleased with the solution, and how smoothly everything went.”
An Investment in Healthcare
PERI systems began being installed in late 2021 and were completed in July of 2022. Components of the project were scheduled to open in early 2023.
